What BMI does not show
- It does not tell muscle from fat. Athletes and people who do strength training are often “overweight” by BMI without carrying excess fat.
- It does not show where fat is stored. Waist circumference says more about fat around the abdomen.
- It is not meant for children and teenagers (they are assessed with growth percentiles for age and sex), or for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
- For older adults and some ethnic groups, the same cut-offs do not reflect risk equally well.
How it is calculated
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Example: 75 kg and 180 cm → 75 ÷ (1.8 × 1.8) = 23.1. In imperial units: 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)².
Not medical advice
BMI is a rough indicator, not a diagnosis. For an assessment of your health, diet or weight loss, talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian.
A number is only a starting point
